The latest season of the horror anthology series Them has achieved critical acclaim, with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Titled The Scare, the second season premiered on Amazon Prime Video on April 25 and stars Luke Cage’s Deborah Ayorinde, Jackie Brown’s Pam Grier, and singer/songwriter Luke James. Ayorinde plays an LAPD detective investigating a gruesome murder set in 1991 and gradually becomes overwhelmed by an evil force.
The Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes “represents the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive for a given film or television show”, and for Them: The Scare, it’s currently at 100%. One review of the eight-episode series praised the performances, saying: “Bolstered by its incredibly gifted actors, Them: The Scare is a terrifying supernatural slasher that moves the anthology to the right track.” Another described it as “deeply unsettling”, and others applauded the show for tackling themes of institutional racism.
The first series in the anthology, called Covenant, was released in April 2021 and has a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It stars British rapper Ashley Thomas and Us actor Shahadi Wright Joseph, and follows a black family who move to a white neighbourhood in Los Angeles in 1953. All episodes of both Covenant and The Scare are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
