Two punk icons, Iggy Pop and Siouxsie Sioux, have teamed up to collaborate on a new rendition of Iggy’s 1977 classic, ‘The Passenger’. The song has been newly recorded by the two punk legends for an advert for Magnum ice cream. The third iteration of the song includes Iggy’s brooding vocals and Sioux’s dramatic verse. The one-minute-long song can be heard in the background of the advert, which features an actress eating an ice cream bar on a train.
‘The Passenger’ was first released in 1977 on Iggy Pop’s iconic album, ‘Lust for Life’, before being re-recorded by Siouxsie And The Banshees a decade later for their 1987 covers album, ‘Through the Looking Glass’. The new rendition for the Magnum advert represents Sioux’s first new music release in almost 10 years, and the first time the song has been re-recorded since she did it in 1987.
In a statement about the collaboration, Sioux said: “I love this song, and I’ve always loved Iggy’s voice. I adore how instinctive and spontaneous it all feels and to hear my voice with Iggy’s is such a dream.” Iggy added: “Siouxsie can sing like a bird. I’ve always thought she was a great lady. Her version of the song was already special, but what happened here, singing together, is really unique. Like ‘Volare’, the orchestral treatment and marriage of voices flies free, in a spirit of joy.”
Iggy Pop’s latest studio album, ‘Every Loser’, was released at the start of 2021, while Sioux made her return to the live stage in 2021 with a series of shows across Europe and America, including a live debut of a song called ‘Israel’. Whilst Sioux has not released any official music in the past 10 years, Iggy Pop’s ‘Every Loser’ album received a positive review from NME, described by Erica Campbell as “a present-day primal punk resurrection from the only musician qualified to make one.”
