A lawyer for Harvey Weinstein has said that the 72-year-old, who was convicted of first-degree and third-degree rape in 2020 and is serving a sentence in California for a further conviction of rape in 2022, is in poor health, having been admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for medical treatment. The district attorney’s office said it would try again to convict Weinstein when he appears in court in New York again on May 1. Reporter Arthur Aidala said the disgraced movie producer had “a lot of problems” and was receiving multiple tests. “He seems like he needs a lot of help, physically,” Aidala said.
Last week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, saying that the judge’s decisions during the trial had been inappropriate. Weinstein was found guilty of two rapes and sexual assault against a former production assistant, and a third rape against an aspiring actress. Three other women gave evidence as part of the prosecution case as to his character.
Weinstein has long been accused of abusing his power and sexually assaulting women. He has denied accusations of non-consensual sex, arguing that all his encounters were consensual. However, he has become the figurehead of the #MeToo movement, which has sought to highlight and counter the many instances of sexual abuse and harassment against women by powerful men in the entertainment world.
