Moby has spoken about his feud with Aphex Twin in the early 1990s in a recent interview with Stereogum, admitting that the tension was saddening because he was a big fan of Aphex Twin’s music. The two artists were on a joint headline tour with Orbital in 1993 when Moby’s insistence on traveling by plane to each gig reportedly caused the dispute with Aphex Twin, who felt that Moby was not being one with the rest of the tour group.
In the interview, Moby discussed how the conflict was a long time ago and that he harbors no ill will towards anyone. Moby also believes that there was a collective embarrassment among the intelligentsia regarding the emotional expression of rave culture, though he has always loved underground electronic music. This cultural divide was evident at the time and may have played a role in the feud between the two musicians.
This was not the first time Moby has spoken about the issue. In 2016, he reflected on Aphex Twin calling him “just a buffoon” on the Rave Curious podcast, stating that it was hard to continue liking someone’s music when they hold you in contempt. Moby also wrote in his memoir Porcelain that same year, “I wanted to like Aphex Twin because I loved his records. But he rarely spoke to anyone, and when he gave interviews, he criticized me for playing guitar on stage. He called me an elitist in the press, when actually I just had crippling tour-bus-inspired insomnia.”
Despite the feud from the past, Moby is now embarking on a European tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his album Play; the biggest-selling electronic album of all time. The tour will be his first in 10 years and will begin on September 19 at the O2 in London before moving onto Antwerp, Berlin, Dusseldorf, and Paris.
