Martin Freeman is delighted to be reprising his role as a worn-out police officer in the BBC’s The Responder. The gritty role has given Freeman a chance to play someone who is “up against it,” he tells the BBC. In the first series of the Bafta-nominated drama, Freeman’s character, PC Chris Carson, was demoted to endless night shifts, struggling to uphold the law while his personal life and mental health unravelled. In the second series, he becomes unwillingly embroiled with local criminals as his personal life worsens.
Based on the experiences of the show’s writer, former police officer Tony Schumacher, the show aims to portray police life in an unfiltered way. Although Schumacher acknowledges the news stories exposing bad police behaviour, he wanted to reflect on how it feels to be a police officer dealing with people screaming in your face and the complexities of the job.
