Shotton: Man dies after parachute incident at industrial estate

A man in his 40s has died in an “incident” involving a parachute on an industrial estate in County Durham. Durham Police were alerted about the “welfare of a man” at 12:30 BST on Monday and subsequently discovered a deceased male at the site on South West Industrial Estate in Shotton. Detective Chief Inspector Mel Sutherland has asked for any passers-by travelling on A19 between 12:20 BST and 12:30 BST to come forward if they have any footage that may help the team in the investigation.

Emergency teams from the North East Ambulance Service, including four Hazardous Area Response Teams and air ambulance support, attended the scene at 12:22 BST. Durham Police have confirmed that they will maintain a cordon around the location for some time in the coming days.

The spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service stated that an “incident in the South West Industrial Estate area of Peterlee” was reported to them and they dispatched different teams including a clinical team leader, a specialist paramedic, and two ambulances.

The thoughts of Durham Police remain with the man’s family.
