After an investigation surrounding the deaths of five migrants – a child among them – two men have now been charged with immigration offences. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday when a boat carrying 112 people crossed the Channel. Five people did not survive after the boat suffered a crush.

According to the National Crime Agency, 22-year-old Yien Both from South Sudan faces charges of assisting unlawful immigration and attempting to enter the UK without valid entry clearance. Tajdeen Adbulaziz Juma, also 22, from Sudan, has been charged with attempting to arrive in the UK without valid entry clearance.

Both men are expected to appear in court in Folkestone after being remanded in custody. Meanwhile, an 18-year-old male from Sudan has been released on bail, pending further inquiries into the incident.

Immigration numbers crossing the Channel have been rising steadily this year, with many putting their lives at risk to make the crossing in dangerous conditions on rickety vessels. The situation has caused concern as the numbers of those attempting to make the crossing continue to grow
