Developers from People Can Fly announced on Monday that they would be cancelling their upcoming game Project Dagger. The game, which had been in development since 2020 and had received backing from Take-Two Interactive before they withdrew, was cancelled due to a lack of satisfactory commercial potential. The studio had been aiming for a 2025 release, and it was meant to be the start of a new franchise.
People Can Fly had previously confirmed that the company was still interested in continuing work on the IP despite parting ways with Take-Two. The team had been working on various improvements to fundamental elements of the game after migrating from Unreal Engine 4 to 5. However, the studio ultimately decided to discontinue work on the project after analysing its development plans.
According to the developer, the discontinuation of Project Dagger will damage the studio’s financial performance, with impairments of approximately $17 – 20 million being expected. The decision comes after People Can Fly reportedly laid off 30 developers from its New York studio in January, who had been working on a project with Square Enix.
This is the latest in a series of project cancellations from gaming studios. Indie developer Flaming Fowl announced that it had halted development on Ironmarked due to a lack of funding, while other major studios such as Microsoft have also cancelled major projects in the past
