Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, UK, has delayed its grand opening yet another time. The United Kingdom’s biggest indoor arena was expected to open earlier this week as comedian Peter Kay was set to perform. However, the opening was delayed, and the venue has now pushed it to May as it is still not ready. The delay has been attributed to the need for more time to test emergency communication systems thoroughly.
The venue’s management has also experienced problems culminating in the resignation of Gary Roden. The delay is disappointing for Kay, who has lamented it, saying: “It’s very disappointing, but your safety is very important, and I won’t compromise that.” The Black Keys gig, which had been scheduled for Saturday, April 27, alongside Kay’s show, has also been moved to next month.
The decision is yet another setback for the arena, which had to cancel thousands of tickets to a test event headlined by Rick Astley last weekend. The venue issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and asserting that the move would allow them to test enhanced emergency communications efficiently, ensuring that fans have the safest possible experience.
The arena has a maximum capacity of 23,500 and is set to host other acts such as Elbow, Eric Clapton, Barry Manilow, and Keane in the upcoming weeks. It is sponsored by the Co-op Group and owned by City Football Group alongside Oakview Music Group. The venue is located next to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, with Harry Styles being among the investors in the area
