Pop music has always been about capturing the aesthetic appetite of the moment, and it’s a genre that’s hard to define. Pop is an abbreviation of ‘popular’, and as a result, it’s an umbrella term for any style or genre that’s in demand at the time. Over the years, the sound of pop has changed, from the energy and attitude of rock and roll in the 60s to the infectious dance-pop tracks that defined the 90s.

In recent years, electronic pop music has dominated pop’s evolution as it takes inspiration from a range of genres and eras. The likes of Dua Lipa, Charli XCX, and K-Pop bands like BTS and Blackpink have all become part of pop’s hall of fame, driving its ongoing vinyl boom. Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Olivia Rodrigo are among the pop stars leading the charge in vinyl sales.

Pop and vinyl have always had a synonymous relationship, and Rough Trade director Nigel House remembers the late music mogul Seymour Stein who discovered Madonna back in 1982. Stein’s introduction of Madonna’s music to Rough Trade seemed strange at the time, coming as it did from a box of 12″s, but the rest is history.
