Nilüfer Yanya, the singer-songwriter, has unveiled her latest single ‘Like I Say (I Runaway)’. This release comes after the debut album ‘Painless’ in 2022. The accompanying video is directed by Nilüfer’s sister, Molly Daniel and stars Nilüfer as a runaway bride. The track is reminiscent of the 90s grunge scene and is underscored by crunchy distorted guitar sounds. Within the song, Nilüfer speaks about the value of time and how every moment should be used wisely as time is a ‘currency’.
The chorus of the song goes, “’Cause I feel like all my friends/ They don’t read my mind/ The minute I’m not in control/ I’m tearing up inside/ Fill up on that feeling/ Fill up on the line”. The artist describes her new single as about “how you choose to spend your time. Time is like a currency, every moment. You’re never going to get it back. It’s quite an overwhelming thing to realize”. The new track was written with Wilma Archer, who has previously collaborated with Nilüfer on both ‘Painless’ and her debut album ‘Miss Universe’.
Nilüfer Yanya has not yet shared details on an upcoming album, but it has been stated that there will be more from the artist “soon”. In a previous review, NME wrote about Yanya’s music that when she “goes all in, she’s at her very best.” Last year, she teamed up with Bombay Bicycle Club on the song ‘Meditate’ from Bombay Bicycle Club’s latest album ‘My Big Day’. The musician was praised by NME for adding a “personable touch” to the song.
