Byrne’s Night, a project that celebrates Scotland’s two greatest poets – Robert Burns and David Byrne – has quickly gained popularity since its debut in 2023 and now the team is taking their show to the big stage with a prime slot at South London’s Wide Awake festival this May. With an all-star lineup playing Talking Heads covers and performing poetry under the glittery, heady heavens of Hackney’s MOTH Club, the team behind Byrne’s Night has curated a list of the American new wave band’s best songs with contributions from some of the London independent scene’s finest emerging musical heroes.
In an interview with the creators of Byrne’s Night, Lola and Maddy, the two discussed the logistics of a successful tribute and the enduring appeal of Talking Heads. When asked about the concept behind the tribute night, Lola explained that the idea was born between explaining Robert Burns night to her tourmates in Glasgow and looking up Scottish musicians and discovering David Byrne made the list. From there, the two collaborated to create an annual celebration of Scotland’s two greatest poets in the form of Byrne’s Night.
The tribute night has had an incredible lineup of artists taking part, including members from some of the finest alternative and independent bands in the capital. The process of matching artists to songs, while challenging, was surprisingly easy as many people were open to the idea of paying homage to Talking Heads. The night itself is a combination of shared love for Talking Heads’ music, and that the event occurs every January when schedules are more clear and people are up for something fun to help get out of the mid-winter slump. The night features various house bands or “supergroups” where performers mix up people who wouldn’t normally play together. Usually with little to no rehearsals, the artists blow the team and the crowd away with their talent.
Taking on the project to Wide Awake festival is no easy feat as when compared to an intimate night at the MOTH Club, the challenges of translating the magic of the evening to the Brockwell Park festival stage require a bit more planning. The team plans to maintain the charm of the night while making it more of a production worthy of a big festival stage.
Byrne’s Night celebrates the music of Talking Heads as well as Scottish poetry and the enduring appeal of the band can be attributed to their ability to incorporate so many different musical influences and marry it with Byrne’s great lyricism. The dream for any Byrne’s Night in the future would include Rick Astley covering Once in a Lifetime or Lana Del Rey singing Heaven.
In conclusion, Byrne’s Night is an event that celebrates the music of Talking Heads as well as Scottish poetry, creating a unique experience that can only be found in the UK. The event has grown in popularity since its debut in 2023 and now takes center stage at South London’s Wide Awake festival this May. The concept was the brainchild of Lola, who was inspired by Scotland’s two greatest poets and David Byrne’s music. The night features various house bands and performers who blow everyone away with their talents. Byrne’s Night continually celebrates the enduring appeal of Talking Heads, and beloved artists covering their best songs is always a highlight of the evening
