Fans of the Mass Effect franchise can expect to say goodbye to one of the game’s most iconic characters. Commander Shepard, the central protagonist of the first three games in Mass Effect, will not be making a comeback for the next installment of the series. In a new interview with Dextero, Jennifer Hale, the voice actress who brought female Commander Shepard to life, revealed that she has not been approached to reprise her role.
Although Electronic Arts (EA) started developing a new Mass Effect game in 2022, updates on the project have been few and far between. The same year, EA confirmed that Deus Ex and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s narrative designer, Mary DeMarle, would be the senior narrative designer of the project, which will reportedly be built using Unreal Engine 5.
BioWare did release a fourth Mass Effect game in 2017 titled Andromeda, which saw players taking control of an inexperienced military recruit. The currently unnamed upcoming Mass Effect game has been promoted as a continuation of the original trilogy and a sequel to Mass Effect: Andromeda.
In a statement released at the end of last year, BioWare said, “We approach the future of this universe with gratitude and deep respect,” adding that they “respect the history and stories you’ve created and the characters you’ve fallen in love with.”
Meanwhile, indie studio Flaming Fowl has unveiled its new project Ironmarked. However, the studio has confirmed that development has been paused, and staff had been let go due to insufficient funding in the game industry
