The famous Liverpool sign in Thomas Steers Way, located near the Hilton Hotel on Liverpool ONE, has received a dazzling new makeover. Claire Pinegar, a Liverpool-based artist, designed the new artwork to showcase the city’s love for football. The design is inspired by vintage Liverpool FC and Everton FC football kits and is a celebration of Liverpool’s football heritage.
Each letter on the 14.5-metre Liverpool sign is wrapped in segments from iconic football kits from the past and features bold lines, bright colours and motifs instantly recognizable to football fans in Liverpool and beyond. The new artwork was officially unveiled by Mark Lawrenson, a former Liverpool FC player, and Graham Stuart, a former Everton FC player, who donned their original kits at the event as a trip down memory lane.
The Liverpool sign was originally unveiled in 2022 as part of a joint commission by Culture Liverpool and Liverpool ONE and has been a popular spot for selfies ever since. The sign is the perfect canvas for creativity and has previously been commissioned as a Eurovision Song Contest takeover and a Liverpool attraction-inspired artwork by Liverpool artist Neil Keating.
Claire Pinegar, a 2D animator, illustrator, and live-action director, said, “Iconic football shirts have as much place in culture as old masters in a gallery. I love the concept of bringing art to street level and the masses. I felt it would be fun for locals and tourists alike to clock nods to their two teams while passing the Liverpool Sign.”
The city of Liverpool is passionate about football, and the Liverpool sign showcases this passion in a fantastic way. The Liverpool sign is an excellent way to bring art to everyday visits to Liverpool, and the continued collaboration with Culture Liverpool will keep putting local talent in front of a global audience.
