Five horses belonging to the Household Cavalry caused chaos in London after throwing their riders and running through the city centre. Four people were taken to the hospital, including three soldiers who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and a cyclist who was a member of the public. The horses collided with several vehicles, including a taxi and a double-decker bus. One of the horses was covered in blood.

The incident occurred during a military exercise in Belgravia, where the horses were initially spooked by loud construction. The Army said the horses, along with their riders, have been recovered and returned to the camp. Two of the horses were found in Limehouse, which was more than five miles from the starting location in Belgravia. They are receiving veterinary care.

The Household Cavalry is responsible for carrying out ceremonial duties around Buckingham Palace, including the annual King’s birthday parade. In preparation for the parade, every military unit needs to pass a Major General’s Inspection, which was due to take place on Thursday in Hyde Park. The group involved in the incident included six soldiers and seven horses.

According to the Army, each horse is chosen specifically for its height and strength, at least 168cm, and undergoes several months of training to get used to heavy traffic and loud noises, including gun salutes and military bands. An army spokesperson expressed “heartfelt gratitude” to the emergency services and the public who helped in securing the horses.
