Actor, TV presenter, and documentarian Terry Carter has passed away at the age of 95, according to his manager Ken Leicht. Carter was best known for his role as Colonel Tigh in the original Battlestar Galactica series. He died at his Manhattan home on April 23 after a prolonged period of ill health. The cause of death was not provided. Carter was a native of Brooklyn, New York, and attended several universities including Boston University and St John’s University’s School of Law.
In addition to acting and presenting, Carter produced over 100 documentaries and presentations for the federal government via Meta/4 Productions, Inc. He also served as president of Council for Positive Images, Inc. which he created in 1979, to improve understanding between cultures. Carter’s most notable project was a two-part documentary exploring the life of jazz pianist Duke Ellington; the piece was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Informational Special.
While best known as Colonel Tigh in Battlestar Galactica (which cast multiple African-American actors in leading roles), Carter also appeared as Sergeant Joe Broadhurst in the detective series McCloud and starred opposite Pam Grier in the 1974 blaxploitation film Foxy Brown.
