Huw Edwards leaves BBC on medical advice

BBC news anchor Huw Edwards has resigned from the corporation on medical advice, according to a statement released by the BBC. Edwards, who was the BBC’s highest-profile news presenter, was last on air in July 2022, following reports in the media that he had paid for sexually explicit images from a young person. Edwards had been suspended since the reports were published. His resignation means that he will not return to the BBC.

The Sun newspaper had published claims that an unnamed BBC presenter had paid for explicit photos from somebody who was under 18 years old when the relationship began. The Sun’s sources were the step-father and mother of the young person. However, a letter issued on the young person’s behalf by their lawyer disputed the account. Edwards’ wife later publicly named him following a period of speculation in the media.

Following his wife’s statement, Edwards revealed that he had been struggling with mental health issues. He had been hospitalised for those issues and had been the subject of speculation about his employment status. The BBC had suspended him pending an investigation. However, no further details have been released about either the nature of Edwards’ medical condition or the BBC’s investigation into the claims made by the Sun.

Edwards was the main presenter of many major national events, including general elections and funerals of State. He joined the BBC as a news trainee in 1984, becoming one of the major presenters of the Six O’Clock News in 1999. Edwards was subsequently one of the main presenters on the Ten O’Clock News, which is the BBC’s flagship bulletin. He was also a commentator for significant events, including royal weddings and funerals. The BBC has not commented on who will replace him as their main news presenter
