Blur frontman, Damon Albarn, announced to fans at their latest Coachella show that it could be their “last ever gig”. The band performed their biggest US shows in nearly a decade over the past two weekends at Coachella, with their final performances on April 13 and April 20. Albarn told fans on stage before their final song, ‘Tender’: “In the spirit of clarity and truth, this is probably our last gig”.
During their first Coachella weekend, Blur was met with a lackluster response from the crowd, who remained silent through some of their biggest hits including ‘Girls & Boys’ and ‘Popscene’. Albarn expressed his frustration to the crowd, saying: “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it!”.
Despite their lackluster first weekend, Blur made their return to Coachella on April 20, confirming that their decision to go on hiatus is “no reflection on Coachella”. Albarn expressed his love for the festival, saying: “I love Coachella, it’s beautiful”. The Desert Sun reported that Albarn praised crowds during the second weekend of Coachella, saying: “This is the truth of Coachella, isn’t it? The second week is music fans, people who appreciate music”.
Last year, Albarn announced that Blur would go on a hiatus after their brief reunion, during which they released their ninth studio album, ‘The Ballad of Darren’. Albarn stated: “It’s time to wrap up this campaign. It’s too much for me.” It is unclear if the band will perform again in the future
