Taylor Swift’s latest album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ has caught the attention of her fans, particularly after the pop icon referred to a person named ‘Lucy’, and many are speculating on who it could be. The album released on April 19, and Swift announced that it is a double album, sharing the remaining tracks earlier this morning. While several fans suggest that the whole album is about her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn and her brief romance with Matty Healy, the second song, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, has caught fans’ attention in particular.
In the song, Swift criticizes her partner’s self-sabotaging behavior, referring to him coming undone, which seems to be about Healy and his infamous string of controversies. The pop icon goes on to recall how her lover once told ‘Lucy’ that he would take his own life if she left him. Fans have speculated about ‘Jack’, to whom Swift refers in the song, as a nod to Jack Antonoff, her longtime collaborator and album producer. Ultimately, fans believe that Lucy is Lucy Dacus, a third of Grammy-winning group boygenius, who has connections to both Swift and Healy.
Dacus has been friends with Healy for years, and the two have soured their relationship in recent months. However, Dacus’s relationship with Swift comes through Phoebe Bridgers, as the latter acted as the opener for the pop icon on her ‘Eras Tour’. Meanwhile, Dacus, Bridgers, and Julien Baker joined Bridgers for the opening slot in Nashville days after Swift confirmed her relationship with Healy. Fans have been reacting to the album, which has received a three-star review from NME. While some fans suggest that the negative public opinion that Swift has experienced is irksome, it doesn’t detract from her skill and creativity.
Swift has referred to Healy again in the track ‘But Daddy I Love Him’ and in a comparison to Patti Smith and the late Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Following the LP’s release, she will resume her career-spanning ‘Eras Tour’, which will head to Europe next month before moving to the UK and Ireland. The pop icon is due to play eight shows at Wembley Stadium in London this summer, with support from Paramore
