According to unnamed sources, director Quentin Tarantino has decided not to make his final film, The Movie Critic. The reasons for this decision remain unknown, but rumours suggest the script was being rewritten and the production had been delayed due to last year’s writers’ and actors’ strike. Reports from Deadline Hollywood claim Tarantino has opted to focus on an entirely new project for his tenth and final film instead. Tarantino has not confirmed the cancellation of The Movie Critic.
The Movie Critic was set to star Brad Pitt, amongst other actors that had previously worked with Tarantino. The film was to be based on a real-life film journalist for a “porno rag” whom Tarantino had read growing up. According to Tarantino, the journalist wrote cynical reviews, which were a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle might have written if he were a film critic.
Tarantino’s retirement plans have been the subject of much interest from the film world. Director Christopher Nolan has characterised it as “very purist,” stating: “It’s addictive to tell stories in cinema. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very fun. It’s something you feel driven to do, and so it’s a little hard to imagine voluntarily stopping.” French director Luc Besson has claimed to have given Tarantino the idea to retire after 10 movies.
