Lucy Rose’s fifth album, ‘This Ain’t The Way You Go Out’, has a defiant title. She faced serious health issues after giving birth, which left her with eight broken vertebrae in her back. In an interview with NME, she revealed that she couldn’t walk or move, and breathing was excruciating. It was a community of musicians – Paul Weller, US rapper Logic and producer Kwes – that encouraged her to create freely and allowed her to navigate her recovery.
‘This Ain’t The Way You Go Out’ celebrates the personal victories on Lucy Rose’s journey. While it is less about bold statements, there is an empowering message of resilience in her work. On ‘Over When it’s Over’, she sings about finding a way through an embattled situation with both grit and grace. The emotionally charged ‘Could You Help Me’ begs for healing, exploring the overwhelming feelings of loneliness that illness can bring.
Lucy Rose’s new album is a sonically varied collection of work. ‘Could You Help Me’ and ‘Life’s Too Short’ bring in a dancey shuffle that is unlike anything she has done before. There is an unapologetic confidence to ‘The Racket’ that is captivating. ‘This Ain’t The Way You Go Out’ marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Lucy Rose.
The album was released on April 19, 2024, and is available on Communion record label
