The Blair Witch Project has been announced to receive another reboot, making it the fourth installment in the series. The original team behind the 1999 cult classic film have voiced their mixed feelings about the latest development, with several members expressing disapproval. Even though 2016’s Blair Witch director Roy Lee is expected to reprise his role, original production designer Ben Rock stated that none of the original filmmakers, including co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, have been approached.
Rock went on to call the news “bittersweet,” adding that “neither one of the sequels connected with audiences the way they wanted it to connect. It might at least be worth talking to some of the original creators.” Similarly, actor Joshua Leonard, who was one of the original film’s three leads, sent a lengthy Instagram post airing his frustration about the seemingly never-ending lack of respect from the people who “pocketed the lion’s share (pun intended) of the profits from OUR work.”
Moreover, original co-producer Mike Monello took to Twitter, stating that Lionsgate and Blumhouse should put the project in the hands of the creators who made the first film. The Blair Witch Project was a highly successful found-footage horror film that ushered in a new era of horror. A few years after its release, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, directed by Joe Berlinger, was released. The most recent remake released in 2017 garnered a mixed response, according to the original co-director, who believes that while it paid respect to the mythology of the original movie, it ended up being too close to the original story
