A man who carried out two attacks on worshippers outside mosques has been given an indefinite hospital order. Mohammed Abbkr, aged 29, sprayed petrol before setting alight Hashi Odowa, 82, and Mohammed Rayaz, 72, in London and Birmingham in February and March last year. Abbkr’s sentencing was delayed while judges ordered a psychiatric test. He was later convicted by a majority verdict over the attacks, both of which were captured on CCTV. He will be held in hospital indefinitely until any consent for his release is given by the relevant secretary of state.
Mohammed Abbkr has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order by a Birmingham Crown Court judge over an attack on worshippers outside mosques. The 29-year-old sprayed petrol onto Hashi Odowa, 82, and Mohammed Rayaz, 72, before setting them on fire during attacks in London and Birmingham last year. Additional psychiatric tests on the defendant delayed the sentencing, but he was eventually convicted by majority verdict. He will be held in hospital until any consent for his release is given by the secretary of state.
Both of the attacks carried out by Abbkr were captured on CCTV footage, leading to his conviction in a majority verdict at trial. Following the attacks, the Birmingham Crown Court ordered psychiatric reports on the defendant before making a final sentencing. Abbkr will now be detained for medical treatment indefinitely until relevant approval for his release is provided by the secretary of state.
The Birmingham Crown Court judge who sentenced Abbkr, Recorder of Birmingham Melbourne Inman KC, confirmed that the defendant will be held in hospital until any foreseeable consent for his release is granted. The motive behind Abbkr’s attacks on worshippers has not been confirmed. More details on this story will be updated in due course
