Lord Cameron, the UK foreign secretary, has urged Israel to show restraint amid tensions in the Middle East, ahead of his talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Following Iran’s missile and drone attack over the weekend, Israel has vowed to retaliate and Lord Cameron is set to push for Israel to rein in the scale of its response, due to fears that it could lead to a wider war.
Lord Cameron has called on Israel to be “smart as well as tough”. Speaking to reporters shortly after his arrival in Jerusalem, he said he was there to “show solidarity after that appalling attack by Iran”. He continued: “It’s right to have made our views clear about what should happen next, but it’s clear that the Israelis are making a decision to act. We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible.”
In addition, Lord Cameron will be attending a G7 meeting in Italy where he will push for coordinated sanctions on Iran. He has accused Tehran of being “behind so much of the malign activity” in the Middle East and called for other countries to adopt measures designed to restrict Iran’s influence.
The Israeli government has repeatedly vowed to retaliate after Iran sent more than 300 drones and missile towards Israel in an unprecedented direct attack overnight on Saturday. Almost all the projectiles were intercepted by Israel’s air defense systems, with the help of the UK, US, France, and Jordan.
