Raimon Hennessy and Pete Rizzo, two scientists working at Davis Research Station in Antarctica, have discovered their shared love for Pokemon Go. Hennessy’s partner Alexandra had asked Niantic to add the remote station as a Pokestop through Reddit, which was successfully done.
Hennessy has been playing Pokemon Go since its launch in 2016, whereas Rizzo is relatively new to the game and discovered it through his son. The desire for more in-game postcards is what spurred Alexandra on asking Niantic to add a way for Davis Research Station players to interact with the game more.
It is not practical for the scientists to play the game from their rooms due to the weather and the remoteness of the southernmost Antarctic station. While the station has 2G without data, stops and a gym are present within station limits. Rizzo shared his challenges stating, “Raimon works in the yellow operations building so he has the opportunity to go between the two stops nearly every day. The gym is a bit more challenging though. It’s further away and in the ‘Pineapple’ building.”
The researchers have discovered a new way to bond over Pokemon Go, and it has provided them with a source of entertainment in one of the world’s most remote regions
