Monkey Shoulder, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM and Mixmag have teamed up to launch a music initiative called ‘Studio Monkey Shoulder’. With a £10,000 grant available, it is intended to support the UK grassroots music community. To coincide with the launch, they held a panel and Q&A on the future of grassroots music.
The event was held at the Total Refreshment Centre in Dalston and was opened by venue owner Lex, who gave an update on the history of the space. Following him, Gilles Peterson, DJ, broadcaster and label owner, addressed the audience about the music scene before the panel took their seats.
Megan Townsend, Mixmag’s Deputy Editor, led the panel featuring author Emma Warren, Melodic Distraction head honcho Josh Aitman, Touching Bass co-founder Alex Rita and Bristol musician and Save the Rhubarb Tavern campaigner Sunny Paradisos. The panel shared their experiences in music and discussed how the grant will benefit those starting out in the industry.
The Monkey Shoulder brand is already known for its support of the music industry, with previous events including the ‘For One Night Only’ series held in Manchester and London, supporting upcoming musicians.
