Sir Salman Rushdie has opened up about his knife attack two years ago when he was stabbed on stage in chilling detail in a BBC interview. The Booker Prize-winning author revealed how he lost his eye, was stabbed 12 times and how losing an eye “upsets me every day”. The attack took place at an education institute in New York state in August 2022. “I remember thinking I was dying,” said Sir Salman. Fortunately, he was wrong.

Sir Salman said he is using his new book, Knife, to fight back against what happened. The assailant, Hadi Matar, a 26-year-old New Jersey resident, has been charged with stabbing him, and the trial is expected to take place in the autumn. Mr Matar has pleaded not guilty. In the book, he has an imaginary conversation with his attacker. “In America, many people pretend to be honest, but they wear masks and lie. And would that be a reason to kill them all?” he asks.
