Sky Ferreira performed a surprise set at Coachella over the weekend and wowed the crowd with her take on “Need You Now” alongside Kevin Abstract. The song is originally from Lady A and garnered the group multiple Grammy awards in 2011, including Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Song of the Year. Ferreira’s version had a synthpop flair that was consistent with her 80s-inspired instrumentals, creating a new experience for fans in attendance. Quadeca was revealed to have produced Ferreira’s cover and also joined Abstract and Dominic Fike on stage later in the performance.

Last year, Ferreira spoke to NME and revealed that her upcoming album, Masochism, which has been pushed back multiple times since initially being set for release in 2015, was nearly complete. She stated, “It’s basically done for the most part, it’s just that some parts need to be re-recorded.” The album was given a firm release date for March 2022 but was delayed due to re-recording and other unforeseen circumstances. Despite Ferreira’s release of “Don’t Forget” in May 2022, her first song since 2019’s “Downhill Lullaby,” the fate of the album is still up in the air.

In September 2023, fans flew a “Free Sky Ferreira” banner over Capitol Records in protest and, two months later, Ferreira was removed from the label’s website. Despite this, the singer is still garnering new fans with her unique performances and musical talents. Her surprise set at Coachella is proof of her versatility and her ability to create new renditions of beloved songs. Fans are eagerly anticipating Ferreira’s follow-up to her 2013 debut album, Night Time, My Time, and are hoping that all the delays and issues will soon be resolved.

Overall, Sky Ferreira’s appearance at Coachella surprised and delighted fans, who were fortunate enough to hear her do an impressive cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now.” Her future is undetermined, as the release of Masochism remains up in the air, but she continues to be an influential and impactful artist in the industry
