Johnny Marr was joined on stage by Neil Tennant from Pet Shop Boys during Marr’s The Spirit Power Tour at London’s Eventim Apollo. Tennant met Marr at the end of the set to perform David Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’ and Electronic’s ‘Getting Away With It’, a song on which Tennant was originally the lead vocalist. “Well, seeing that it feels like a special occasion for Johnny boy and all, I’m gonna invite someone up to come and sing with us tonight,” Marr said from the stage. “Someone I have had the pleasure of working with for 30 years now, in the studio and on the stage. Please welcome, from Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant.”
Footage from the show has been shared on social media, and Marr later wrote on Twitter, “Friday night in Hammersmith was a buzz. Thank you to my ace band and my friend Neil Tennant for Rebel Rebel and Getting Away With It. The privilege was mine.”
Marr played a total of 20 songs at the Eventim Apollo gig, culminating in the Bowie and Electronic covers with Tennant. The ten remaining shows on his tour will finish on 14 April.
Marr will also perform at a major show on 31 July, opening for Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds at Warwick Castle, alongside The Waeve. He will also be one of the support acts for Suede at a show in August, part of the Heritage Live concert series in Saffron Walden, Essex, alongside Nadine Shah.
Earlier this year, Marr reacted to a video showing The Smiths’ ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ being used at a Donald Trump rally. In a tweet, he wrote, “Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this **** shut right down right now.”
