The debut single from Kate Stein’s label, ’99FVR’, has been released. ‘SNAFU’ is a nod to ’90s rave music and features pulsating drum beats and a contrasting bassline. The ethos behind 99FVR is to redefine the ‘peak time’ sound and create moments of intensity, ambiguity, and nostalgia where simultaneous states of euphoria and discomfort can coexist. The track is meant to take the listener on a journey through various states of distortion, resulting in confusion and building toward a mood of unrest.
Several remixes of the track have been produced, as well. Mala Ika’s remix channels classic house music with a modern twist. Meanwhile, the remix by Neu Romancer and Radondo has a moodier, chugging quality that reimagines the original’s energy.
When asked about the inspiration behind ‘SNAFU’, Stein said that she was living in Los Angeles when she began writing the track. After being inspired by listening to classic bands like The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy, she felt a pull to reimagine this sound for modern dancefloors. She wanted to create a label that felt like a home for the ambiguous sounds and moments that occur on the dancefloor. Stein explains that the feeling that she was striving for with ‘SNAFU’ was delirious, sweaty, and in a trance. In duality, this feeling can also be slightly uncomfortable.
‘SNAFU’ is available now via 99FVR. It is a reminder of the euphoria and confusion that often coexist in dance music culture. It promises to keep the experience interesting and challenging while also delivering moments of nostalgia that will be appreciated by fans of ’90s rave music
