Ann Carter, a woman from Stoke Orchard near Cheltenham, has expressed her gratitude for her postman who she credits with saving her life. Ms Carter went into cardiac arrest while on the phone with the NHS 111 service. Her daughter ran outside to call for help and their postman, who happened to be passing by, gave CPR until paramedics arrived. Great Western Air Ambulance paramedic, Callum Sutton, said that Ms Carter “wouldn’t have had the same outcome” if her postman had not helped her.

Ms Carter had been feeling unwell and experiencing chest pains prior to collapsing. She called for help and was on the phone for 12 minutes before falling unconscious. Her daughter was home from school and heard the commotion, leading the paramedics to direct her to perform CPR on her mother. The postman who had been checking in on Ms Carter was able to take over until professional paramedics arrived.

Following the incident, Ms Carter spent three days in intensive care and recovered in a cardiac unit. She attributes her survival to the life-saving intervention of the postman. “It’s miraculous I’m alive, really,” said Ms Carter. She has since attended an event at Cheltenham Town Football Club that taught people how to give CPR.

Great Western Air Ambulance paramedic, Callum Sutton, emphasized the importance of bystander intervention in situations like these. He urged people to learn CPR and to call 999 immediately in the event of a medical emergency. The sooner that CPR is initiated, the better the chances of survival and recovery for the individual in need
