Doctor Who: Varada Sethu confirmed as new companion

Actress Varada Sethu will be joining the cast of Doctor Who as Ncuti Gatwa’s companion for the second series of his Doctor Who run. Sethu, known for her recent portrayal in the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor, expressed her gratitude towards the opportunity, calling it an “honour”. In May, Gatwa’s first series as the Doctor will commence, with Millie Gibson playing the role of companion Ruby Sunday. However, the BBC has confirmed that Sethu will join the pair for the following series, which will air in 2025.

Sethu, who also appeared in the 2018 crime drama Hard Sun and Jurassic World Dominion, stated that it was a great privilege to enter the world of Doctor Who. She expressed her excitement to join “the best team” and embark on this new adventure beside Gatwa and Gibson. The BBC has not revealed the specifics of Sethu’s character; nevertheless, the network issued snapshots of her during a table reading with Gatwa and Gibson for an upcoming episode.

Speculation circulated several months ago regarding Sethu’s appearance in Doctor Who and replacing Gibson. Nevertheless, the latter actress has been featured with Gatwa in The Church on Ruby Road, which aired as a Christmas Special, revealing that Sunday was adopted and that her true parentage was unknown.

Speaking about his upcoming season, showrunner Russell T Davies stated that it was delightful to have Sethu on board, whom he previously worked with, during BBC’s midsummer Night’s Dream production. It was essential to have all three characters in the show, declared Davies, as the stakes will be higher than ever, with Sethu, Gatwa, and Gibson fighting side by side.

When Doctor Who returns on 11 May, it will premiere on BBC iPlayer at midnight, followed by the BBC One broadcast later that same day
