O.J. Simpson dies aged 76 from cancer, family confirms

O.J. Simpson, a former American footballer, has passed away at the age of 76 after losing his battle to cancer. His family released a statement on April 11th requesting privacy during the transition. Simpson had a successful footballing career after beginning with the Buffalo Bills in 1968, where he remained for the majority of his 11 seasons of professional football. During his football career, Simpson transitioned into acting, starring on major films and television series such as The Klansman, Roots, and The Towering Inferno.

In the 1990s, Simpson was involved in a high-profile murder trial that involved the deaths of his second wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Simpson was tried and charged for their murders after being named a person of interest. The trial lasted 11 months, from November 1994 to October 1995, and was one of the most publicised events in American history. Some of Simpson’s defence representatives included Robert Kardashian and Robert Shapiro, among others. Although he was found not guilty for the murders, he was ruled responsible for the deaths in a civil suit filed by the victims’ families three years later.

In 2007, Simpson was arrested and charged with kidnapping and armed robbery in Las Vegas, after serving his sentence he was granted parole in July 2017 and released in October 2017. His parole was later granted an early release and lifted in 2021. Simpson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February of this year and his family has relayed that he is survived by his two children Arnelle and Jason.

A television series titled The People V O.J. Simpson, which starred Cuba Gooding Jr as Simpson, David Schwimmer as Kardashian, and John Travolta as Shapiro, was released in 2016. The series recorded a total of eight Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, and four Critics’ Choice Awards
