Gina Carano “grotesquely trivialised” the Holocaust, Disney says

Disney has recently spoken out about its decision to fire Gina Carano who played the role of Cara Dune in Star Wars spin-off series, The Mandalorian. Carano had taken Disney to court in the hopes of regaining her role and being awarded $75,000 after being fired in 2021 for controversial posts on her social media platforms. In her February 2021 posts, Carano appeared to compare the experiences of the Jewish community during the Holocaust to that of individuals with differing political views. Following this, Disney filed the reasoning behind her dismissal and stated that the company had ‘had enough’ of her ‘social media usage.’

In an Instagram post shared on February 10, 2021, Carano reposted a controversial post that read: ‘Jews were beaten on the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children.’ This post was initially shared by an account named warriorpriestgympodcast. It went on to discuss the Nazi occupation and the way in which the German government stirred up anti-semiticism amongst the country’s non-Jewish population. With this in mind, Gina commented: ‘How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?’

In response, Lucasfilm made the decision to stop working with Carano, dismissing any plans to involve her in future projects. Disney’s former CEO later expressed that Carano’s views were not aligned with the company’s core values of decency, respect, inclusion, and integrity. Following this, the company released a statement, saying that her ‘social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.’

Recently, Carano spoke out about her termination and how the backlash had affected her in The Hollywood Reporter, saying that ‘it became very popular to hate me and pick on me,’ and that the Hollywood press had associated her with an ‘extreme right-wing thing that I am not.’ Disney has remained firm in its stance that Carano’s social media activity was unacceptable and believes it was necessary to sever ties with her as a result, despite any backlash that may have ensued
