Charisse C releases debut EP ‘EVERGREEN’

Charisse C, an Amapiano powerhouse, has released her first EP entitled ‘EVERGREEN’. The EP is a production collaboration among DJ Kwamzy, a Ghanaian-British producer and South African’s Shazmicsoul, known for their Soulful House beats. The creation of the ep was marked by the launching of the label “Abantu”, which is owned by Charisse C herself, with the debut release of ‘EVERGREEN’ on March 16 at Village Underground in London.

The EP has four tracks that showcase Charisse C’s prowess as a singer and songwriter. The genres and influences draw from various sources, showcasing South Africa’s emerging genre 3-step. “Angisafuni”, the lead single, has a stripped-down but funky rhythm that captivatingly opens the four-track EP. The track’s second half takes you on a journey of South African inspired deep house sounds reminiscent of summer. “Morning Sun” is a pop-leaning, but still has an amapiano vibe, while “What I Need” brings in Charisse’s heated R&B taste. She builds out the song with atmospheric vocal tracking. The final song on the EP, “Nguva Yangu,” is an ‘ode’ to Zimbabwe, Charisse C’s birth country.

Charisse C wrote on her Instagram account about the release of her first exploration of her voice. She also shares how it is an overcoming of fears and a commitment to exist in her multitudes. The title of the EP reflects Charisse C’s “ever-evolving nature and artistic expression,” according to a statement shared with Mixmag. Her debut release on her label Abantu is a signal that more is to come from her, and there’s no denying that the world can expect more from her and South Africa’s music in general
