Lucy Boynton and Justin H. Min, stars of The Greatest Hits, recently visited Rough Trade Soho to browse through vinyl records as part of the store’s Shoplifting tradition. The actors selected albums that held personal meaning, memories and told stories. The Greatest Hits, also directed and written by Ned Benson, tells the story of Harriet (played by Lucy), who discovers the power of music and memory as she travels back in time through certain songs while navigating new love interest in the present, Justin (played by Justin H. Min).
Both Lucy and Justin explained their love for music from different angles but shared the belief that it made the film more powerful. Lucy’s perspective is of music’s importance in her life is personal and she recognised that the film was practicing the same nostalgia with the character Harriet. “All of my playlists and all of my relationships with the songs within them are so nostalgia-based. I know exactly where I was and with who when I hear them and that’s why the songs that are my favourites are so important to me,” she said.
Justin was drawn to the clarity of the vision director Ned Benson had for the film. Justin said, “I think Ned was so specific about his music choices. You don’t get this a lot in scripts, but he actually had music in it already and most of the song choices stayed the same throughout. I remember listening to the songs and kind of reading the script along with them and I was immediately struck by like, wow, this is going to be so powerful with the combination of the soundtrack and story.”
Lucy selected the Back To The Future soundtrack. It reminded her of a lovely experience she had while watching the film at an outdoor screening in Greenwich Park with her parents when she was younger. On the other hand, Justin went for Sigur Rós, appreciating the alternative, hypnotic, and non-traditional approach of the Icelandic band. He also selected Jamie XX’s In Colour, which had a song featured in a scene with Lucy’s character and gave him an emotional attachment to the album. Lucy chose Beach House, which also had a song featured in the film, embodying the feeling of moving forward and investing in the present, which was the film’s theme that they explored through music.
The Greatest Hits arrives on Disney+ on April 12th
