This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy, and Liverpool will be holding a minute’s silence to honour the 97 people who lost their lives. The silence will be held on Monday, April 15th at precisely 3.06 pm, the exact time that the match was stopped. Upon the completion of this minute of silence, a bell will toll 97 times, representing each victim of the tragedy. The tribute will occur in Exchange Flags behind Liverpool Town Hall, and members of the public are encouraged to attend to show their respect.
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Mary Rasmussen will lead the tribute and address those attending. Liverpool Town Hall will also be open to the public from 3 pm to 4:30 pm on the day, enabling people to view a specially designated Freedom of the City plaque that is inscribed with the names of the 97 individuals who lost their lives during the disaster. The honour was initially bestowed upon the 96 in September 2016 and eventually included Andrew Devine’s name in May 2022, who had been considered as the disaster’s 97th victim.
In remembrance of the victims, flags will be flown half-mast from civic buildings from across the city, with the Town Hall being lit up in red in the evening to show the city’s solidarity and respect. Those who cannot attend the tribute in-person can follow the livestream of the ceremony on Liverpool City Council’s Facebook page from 3 pm on the day. It’s a small but powerful way to mark the tragedy and show solidarity with those affected
