Bungie, the video game development studio behind Destiny 2, has been known for constantly updating their game with expansions and new content, but it seems that a sequel may be in development. Despite past conversations about Destiny 3 being shut down in lieu of creating an ever-evolving game, executive creative director Luke Smith recently shared a message about the future of the game at a preview event for the upcoming expansion called The Final Shape. According to Smith, “After you face The Witness, we’re gonna tell you what’s coming next to Destiny 2 and beyond. We’ll see you soon.”
While details are vague, some fans believe that Bungie may be developing Destiny 3 due to a recent confirmation of a new Prismatic subclass. This confirmation aligns with a Reddit leak from last month, where the leaker described the exact same class and claimed that Destiny 3 was in development under the name “Payback.” The leaker also revealed that one of the big changes coming to Destiny 3 would be the removal of classes. Although the leak was met with speculation, fans are more interested in the possibility of Destiny 3 after Prismatic was confirmed.
Last year, the release of The Final Shape was delayed until June 2024 to allow developers to make a bigger and better expansion. Additionally, Marathon, another Bungie game, remains without a release date. Meanwhile, Fortnite fans can look forward to another crossover with Coachella Festival, where emotes, items, experiences, and songs from the festival will be added to the game this weekend.
Despite Bungie’s emphasis on creating an ever-evolving game, the possibility of a Destiny 3 seems to be on the horizon. Fans will have to wait for more details from the developers about the future of the game beyond The Final Shape expansion
