The family of a woman who was fatally stabbed while pushing her baby in a pram in Bradford has spoken out about their grief. Kulsuma Akter, from Oldham, was killed on Saturday afternoon, prompting a nationwide manhunt that led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Ms Akter’s cousin, Aftab Miah, described her as “polite and humble” with a great sense of humour, and said that her family were “devastated”, with her mother in Bangladesh inconsolable. Mr Miah added that the family just wanted “justice.”
Ms Akter had moved to Oldham with her husband about two years ago, and Mr Miah said that she had been a “very caring and humble” person who had always made people laugh. He called her a “wonderful lady” who was “generous and likeable,” and said that he would miss her very much. People in the community, he said, had been “shocked by what happened,” adding that the family had received many messages of support.
West Yorkshire Police’s Det Ch Insp Stacey Atkinson described the incident as “tragic” and said that it had caused considerable concern in the local community. The family of Ms Akter, however, were focused on “justice,” according to Mr Miah. He said that they did not want revenge, only for the person responsible to be held accountable.
