Bradford stabbing: Man arrested on suspicion of killing Kulsuma Akter

A 25-year-old man, Habibur Masum, has been arrested in Buckinghamshire on suspicion of fatally stabbing 27-year-old Kulsuma Akter as she pushed her baby in a pram in Bradford city centre. Ms Akter was attacked on Saturday afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Masum had been the subject of a nationwide manhunt.

In November 2020, Mr Masum had been charged with assaulting and threatening to kill Ms Akter, who he denied having any involvement with. Court documents show that he had threatened to kill Ms Akter on 24 November and assaulted her on 23 November in Manchester. Mr Masum was bailed by magistrates.

On Monday, Greater Manchester Police and the West Yorkshire force referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as they had previous contact with Ms Akter. On the same day, a 23-year-old man was arrested in Cheshire on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Churches and mosques in Bradford have opened up to allow people to grieve and pray, with an assistant curate of Bradford Cathedral urging people in the community to participate. Det Ch Insp Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police, called the attack a “tragic incident in which a mother has lost her life in the most horrific of circumstances
