Actors Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes have reportedly signed on to join Cillian Murphy in the upcoming sequel to the 2002 horror film 28 Days Later. The film, tentatively titled 28 Years Later, will be directed by the original film’s director Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Murphy is set to reprise his lead role from the original film. The roles of Comer and Fiennes have not yet been announced, nor have any other casting details been revealed.

According to a report from the Hollywood Reporter, the new film will be the first in a trilogy for the franchise, with a budget of $75 million per film. The original 28 Days Later was a critical and commercial success upon its release, with a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, released in 2007. Both Boyle and Garland executive-produced the sequel.

While speaking with NME in 2022 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 28 Days Later, Murphy and Boyle discussed their plans for a potential follow-up. Boyle revealed that Garland had written a script titled 28 Months Later a few years prior, but nothing came of it. “I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?” said Boyle.

Comer is best known for her role in the hit TV show Killing Eve, while Fiennes has an extensive filmography, including roles in the Harry Potter and James Bond franchises, among others.

28 Years Later is set to begin filming later this year, with a planned release date of 2023
