To celebrate the US total solar eclipse on April 8th, Vampire Weekend staged a special live-streamed performance at the Moody Amphitheater in Austin, Texas. At 12pm CT, the band took to the stage and their performance ran for approximately two and half hours until 2:30pm CT, coinciding with the eclipse reaching totality at 1:36pm CT. Fans were able to watch the full show via the streaming platform Veeps, where a free ticket could be claimed. The performance is also available to view on-demand, exclusively for Veeps All Access subscribers.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking out the sunlight. This was the first such eclipse visible across the US, Mexico, and Canada since 2017, and America will not see this celestial phenomenon again for another 21 years.
Vampire Weekend’s performance in Austin was in support of their fifth album, “Only God Was Above Us”, which was released on April 5th. In a review, NME described the album as “an ambitious concoction of sounds that don’t seem to exist in the same realm, yet intertwine naturally beneath [frontman Ezra] Koenig’s increasingly sullen vocals.” Following their performance in Austin, the band began their North American tour, including shows in Europe, the UK and Ireland this year. The band is also due to perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Luton next month. Other festival appearances for the season include Primavera Sound, Kilby Block Party, and Hinterland.
