Dave McCabe, the lead singer of The Zutons, has revealed how Amy Winehouse’s profanity towards him led to her iconic cover of their song ‘Valerie’. During an interview as part of the Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells series, McCabe said he had met Winehouse three times during his life. He recalled how Winehouse’s friend Boo kept comparing him to the late singer and said Winehouse told him to “fuck of”, because Boo was her friend. McCabe walked out a strop but Winehouse later followed him and they carried on drinking. Winehouse later admitted she really liked the song ‘Valerie,’ and her record label released her cover with producer Mark Ronson in 2007.
The Zutons’ first album in 13 years, ‘The Big Decider’, is set to be released on April 26 and was produced by Nile Rodgers at Abbey Road Studios. McCabe says that having Rodgers on board as the producer has been an “amazing experience”, and believes that the legendary producer is bringing out the best in the group. The band were able to send him their music thanks to their “advantage of a past success” and he later Zoomed the band to let them know that he loved what they had produced.
In other news, NME has created a guide to Amy Winehouse’s Camden in anticipation of the release of her biopic ‘Back To Black’, which lands in UK/Ireland cinemas on April 12. The movie will feature rare, previously unseen footage and unheard tracks that have never been seen before
