The upcoming release of a new Beatles book titled All You Need Is Love has unearthed details of an uncomfortable interaction between Mick Jagger and John Lennon. Set to be published on April 11, All You Need Is Love is an oral history of the band and draws on the controversial 1983 book The Love You Make, which was written by Peter Brown and Steven Gaines, the personal assistant to Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Gaines claimed that Paul McCartney and his then-wife Linda “tore the book apart and burned it in the fireplace, page by page”.
The upcoming book release coincides with the recent documentary Get Back by Peter Jackson and is expected to contain previously unknown revelations about The Beatles’ career. Amongst the revelations is the uncomfortable encounter between Lennon and Jagger. The event took place when Allen Klein became The Beatles’ accountant in 1969, and fired everyone they were working with at the time. Gaines claimed that Lennon arranged for Klein to meet with The Beatles and Jagger at the same time, despite the latter’s deep distrust of Klein. The encounter was deeply embarrassing for Jagger and reportedly left him feeling uncomfortable.
In other Beatles-related news, Paul McCartney recently praised Beyoncé’s cover of the band’s classic track “Blackbird”. Featuring on her new country album Cowboy Carter, McCartney described the cover as “fabulous” and noted that it helped fight against racial tension. NME rated the album five stars, noting that it was a thrill to see Beyoncé take on such a vocal-focused project and make way for country’s up-and-comers.
All You Need Is Love is expected to contain further insights into The Beatles’ careers and personal lives. The book is based on Brown and Gaines’ interviews from The Love You Make and is likely to be a must-read for Beatles fans
