After over 30 years of being adorned with graffiti and messages referencing Nirvana’s late frontman Kurt Cobain, the Young Street Bridge, located in Cobain’s hometown of Aberdeen, Washington, is at risk of destruction due to its deteriorating condition. The song ‘Something In The Way’ references this bridge in the opening lines as Cobain contemplates his life whilst “living under the bridge.” However, the city of Aberdeen has secured a $23 million federal funding grant to revitalise the bridge and “honour the significance of Kurt Cobain.” Unfortunately, this may still result in the destruction of the original structure as it suffers from the effects of aging.
To address this situation, the city is considering several options. The first is restoring the bridge to its current form, while the second is to replace parts of the bridge. The third, and most radical, option is to replace the entire bridge. The city has pledged to accommodate the significance of Kurt Cobain, whichever option is taken.
The news follows the observation of the 30th anniversary of Cobain’s death, where friends and family paid tributes to him. Krist Novoselic, Cobain’s former bandmate in Nirvana, acknowledged that Kurt’s charisma, intensity, and melody created the band’s enduring appeal. Frances Bean Cobain, Kurt’s daughter, shared a series of images of her father alongside a tribute to him and opened up about how his death has impacted her throughout her life.
