The family of a man who was tragically killed after being hit by a lorry has expressed their distress after receiving speeding tickets addressed to the deceased. Shafiqul Haidhar, a 39-year-old maths teacher from Barking, was involved in a car accident before being hit by a lorry while waiting for recovery on the M1 in Leicestershire on August 23, 2020. Three speeding tickets were subsequently sent to Mr. Haidhar’s home, causing more trauma to his family.
Leicestershire Police received a call from a member of the public at around 5:58 BST to attend to Mr. Haidhar on the hard shoulder to wait for recovery. However, no police resources were reportedly assigned to the incident, and the force log was closed at 06:24.
Mr. Haidhar’s brother, Kaisor Ahmed, had called Leicestershire Police several times over concerns about his brother’s mental health and safety. “I told them he was vulnerable and that it wasn’t safe for him to be there because of his mental health,” he said. “I said just take him to a police station or something and I would pick him up.” Sadly, Mr. Haidhar was struck by a lorry at 07:47 and passed away at the scene.
Thames Valley Police and the Metropolitan Police expressed their condolences and sympathy to Mr. Haidhar’s family after the distress they had endured. The case was discontinued in March once Oxford Magistrates’ Court had been notified. Meanwhile, the Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating Leicestershire Police over the calls made to the force by Mr. Ahmed about his brother’s welfare, and an inquest into Mr. Haidhar’s death has been suspended while the inquiry continues
