Secluded woodland at a nature reserve became the site of a murder investigation after a passer-by reported seeing an “unknown item” wrapped in plastic. Upon further inspection, it was found that the package contained human remains. The alarm was raised in Kersal Wetlands, Salford on Thursday, prompting efforts to positively identify the remains. As yet, the person has not been identified, and it remains unclear how or why the body ended up in the woods.
Greater Manchester Police released a statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation. Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes noted that “although this is a disturbing and unsettling find, we have a large visible presence in the area to complete enquiries, provide reassurance and to listen to any concerns.” The investigation will likely continue for some time, and members of the public are encouraged to come forward if they know anything or witnessed anything unusual in the Kersal Dale region over the past few days.
According to a police spokesperson, the fact that the body was wrapped in plastic meant that “it would not be possible for the victim to have survived.” Investigators are asking for the public’s help in piecing together any information that could be relevant to the investigation. No arrests have yet been made, and police have yet to publicly identify the victim.
While this discovery is certainly disturbing, law enforcement officials are committed to resolving the situation and doing everything within their power to bring closure to the victim’s family. The investigation is ongoing, and more details will likely emerge in the coming days
