The Fair, a festival production company, has recently launched a new documentary called It Takes A Village. The film depicts the work that goes on behind the scenes of holding festivals and events and seeks to create further support for the industry and its workers. The Fair hopes that the documentary can ‘shine a light on the value of festivals and events’ and promote support to keep this sector thriving.
It Takes A Village follows the on-site production team to various festivals such as Gottwood, Maiden Voyage and El Dorado. The London-based team has been working for a decade on large-scale events and festivals. The documentary showcases the everyday challenges of the team including rail strikes to lightning strikes on top of the major issues faced by the industry, for example, increasing supply chain costs and minimal support.
One in six UK festivals which were operating in 2019 are not running in 2023 according to data shared by the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) in the documentary. Currently, The Fair is supporting AIF’s Five Percent For Festivals campaign by urging the government to reduce the VAT on music festival ticket sales for three years.
Nick Morgan, the CEO of The Fair says that the cultural crisis is being vocal and stresses the importance that the sector is supported by the government. Yasmin Galletti, Group Director of The Fair, shares her belief in the close community culture of on-site colleagues which needs to be celebrated.
Moreover, It Takes A Village premiered at the Night Time Industry Association’s Night Time Economy Summit in Manchester last month. The Fair also took this opportunity to host a series of panels that examine the festivals and events industry. The documentary aims to highlight all the hard work of the industry and emphasizes the need for more support. It is available to watch below
