Television fans of the cult British sitcom, Bottom, can rejoice as extended cuts of two episodes will be aired for the first time. The show, which featured Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmonson, followed the antics of two crude, unemployed flatmates living in London. The slapstick, nihilistic comedy grew out of the duo’s previous collaborations, including Filthy Rich & Catflap and The Young Ones.
Gold will air the extended episodes from season two of the show. Titled Holy and Digger, each episode will feature an extra three to five minutes of footage previously unseen on television. Holy’s extended scenes include a humorous take on a Christmas tree, whilst new footage for Digger revamps the whole episode.
Both extended episodes will run in a double bill from 9pm on Friday April 19th. Previously, Holy was available as part of the season two DVD release, but the new cut of Digger has never been seen before. Fans of all ages will appreciate the new material, especially as the content reflects the anarchic, anti-establishment humor of Mayall and Edmonson at their prime.
Adrian Edmonson himself has provided insight into the series in his new one-off documentary, Bottom: Exposed. The documentary aired the night before the extended episodes and revealed further details regarding the creators’ process and their working relationship. After almost twenty years since the final episode aired, these extended editions might well be a fitting tribute to Rik Mayall after his death in 2014.
So, Bottom aficionados should mark April 19th in their diaries for a night of exclusive Bottom content. Not only will the newly edited episodes inject new life into the classic series, but they will also delight fans of Mayall and Edmonson who will always remain cult figures in British comedy
