Carla Gugino has recently opened up about the risks involved in her role in the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, Gerald’s Game. In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Gugino stated that the book was considered un-adaptable by Stephen King and that someone else was originally attached to play her role. However, after speaking with director Mike Flanagan, Gugino got the role and started filming just two weeks later. Gugino described it as a real risk, stating that it could have either been the end of her career or something special. She went on to say that she’s “so thankful that it was the former.”

follows the story of a BDSM couple trying to reignite their marriage. The couple’s vacation plans soon go awry after the husband dies during a sex act. The wife, played by Gugino, is left handcuffed to a bed. In the interview, Gugino explained that she didn’t specifically gravitate towards the horror genre, but was compelled by Mike Flanagan’s voice as a filmmaker. She described his ideas and clarity of vision as being so precise that she “aligned with it right away.”

Mike Flanagan wrote and directed Gerald’s Game before adapting fellow King novel, Doctor Sleep. He also directed the 2018 mini-series The Haunting of Hill House, in which Gugino starred. The actress has said that she enjoys coming in to help Flanagan tell his stories, describing him as a “wonderful writer and director, and editor.” Their collaborations have been inspiring for Gugino because Flanagan is “collaborative” and knows what he wants to achieve.
